MBS Group | Build a Business That Works for You

MBS Group

Build a business that works for you.

Better numbers. Better decisions. A business built around what you actually want from life.

We're accountants, coaches and business owners. We help other business owners understand where they are, decide where they want to go and build a business that gets them there.

Two businesses, one belief

Two different jobs. One underlying belief.

MBS Accountants and MBS Coaching solve two different problems. You can use one, or both — neither depends on the other.

I want a better accountant

MBS Accountants

We'll make the financial side of your business clear, well-run and easy to deal with.

MBS Accountants exists for owners who want better accounting, better financial information and less hassle: compliance done properly, bookkeeping and financial admin taken care of, and reporting that actually helps you understand what's happening in your business.

What we believe

Your business should work for you.

A successful business should let its owner do what they want, when they want, with who they want.

That doesn't necessarily mean building the biggest business possible. For one owner, success might mean building a £20m business and selling it. For another, it might mean a great income, a three-day week, and more time with their family. There's no universal definition of a better business — so the first job is understanding what you actually want yours to give you. Then it can be built around achieving it.

01

Better businesses start with better owners

If the business needs to change, the owner usually needs to change too. Better thinking leads to better decisions, better leadership and better businesses. Set goals you genuinely want and can believe are possible — then work out what needs to change to achieve them.

02

Take responsibility for what you can control

Ownership, accountability and responsibility, not blame, excuses or denial. Things happen you can't control — the useful question is what you're going to do about it. That applies to our clients, and to how we run MBS.

03

Evidence beats assumption

"More sales" isn't automatically the answer. Sometimes the real issue is margin, pricing, capacity, people or cash. Understand what's actually happening before deciding what to do about it.

04

The owner owns the decision

Our job is to ask good questions, challenge assumptions and explain the evidence — not to tell you how to run your business. It's yours. You own the decision, and what happens next.

05

Great people don't need micromanaging

Clear expectations, good systems and real trust. We believe owners should hire up — building a team that's brilliant at the things they shouldn't be doing themselves.

We don't believe businesses need endless frameworks or dashboards. Just honest answers to a few questions: where are we, where are we trying to go, what's stopping us, what matters most right now, what are we going to do — and did we do it?

20+ years in the making

Built around life, since 2005.

The philosophy MBS now teaches other business owners has actually been part of the business since the very beginning.

2005

Built around life

Sam Morgan started MBS as a bookkeeping and payroll practice. She and Ian had young children, and the business was deliberately built around family life — to work around the children, earn good money, and have control over their own time and future. The belief that your business should enable the life you want existed within MBS from day one.

2009–2018

Systems, then relationships

Ian joined in 2009 as MBS grew into a full accounting practice. Sam built the systems and processes that made MBS less dependent on the owners doing everything themselves. From 2016, conversations increasingly moved beyond "here are your accounts" towards "what are you trying to achieve?"

2020

Covid changed the conversation

Business owners faced enormous uncertainty and needed far more than historic accounts — cash visibility, help understanding support schemes, and someone to think things through with. It reinforced what we'd increasingly realised: great financial information matters, but owners also need good people around them when the big decisions arrive.

Today

Two businesses, one philosophy

Accounting and coaching increasingly overlapped — and we realised they solve two different problems. Some owners simply want a better accountant. Others already have one, and want someone to challenge their thinking and hold them accountable. That's why MBS Group is now two distinct businesses: different expertise, same philosophy.

MBS has now been supporting business owners for more than 20 years — grown from a small bookkeeping and payroll practice into a team supporting established owner-managed businesses. What matters isn't the size. It's that MBS has experienced many of the same challenges it now helps other owners navigate: hiring, building systems, delegating, changing roles, and learning from our own mistakes along the way. Ian's own role has evolved from accountant to business owner, leader and coach — this comes from doing it ourselves, not from a textbook.

How the two connect

Clarity Decisions Action

MBS Accountants helps you understand the numbers. MBS Coaching helps you decide what to do about them — and everything else that comes with running a business.

  1. Clarity

MBS Accountants makes sure your numbers are accurate, well-run and explained in plain English — so you can trust what you're looking at.

  2. Decisions

MBS Coaching helps you work through what the numbers — and everything else about running the business — actually mean for your next move.

  3. Action

Regular accountability keeps the important priorities moving, instead of good decisions quietly stalling once the meeting ends.

You can use either business independently. Some businesses will naturally benefit from both, and when they do, the two teams can work brilliantly alongside each other.

Growing MBS

Building the next chapter of MBS.

MBS Group grows organically, and through the carefully selected acquisition of established UK accounting practices. We've learned that a great accounting practice is far more than a client list. It's the people, relationships, culture, systems, knowledge and trust built over many years — so that's what we look beyond the numbers for when considering an acquisition.

We're not interested in simply buying blocks of fees. We're looking for a genuine fit between people, clients, culture, values, systems and commercial model — and we know selling a practice is personal. Owners care what happens to their clients, their team, their reputation and the business they've spent years building. Our approach is straightforward, commercial, confidential, respectful and human.

What we look for

  • Genuine fit between people and culture
  • Clients who'll be well looked after long-term
  • Systems and values that fit alongside ours
  • A commercial model that works for both sides
  • Owners who care what happens next, not just the price
